A very kind gentleman visited our March 2026 jumble sale with some donations.  Then he sought out our Group Scout Leader and gave us a 78rpm record containing two scout songs, one of which contains a section spoken by Baden-Powell

Sleeve

The two songs on the record are:

  • The Boy Scout Jubilee Jamboree Song (mp3)
  • In My Dreams I'm Going Back to Gilwell (feat. Baden-Powell) (mp3)

Side A Side B

The record was released in 1957 on the Pye Nixa label for the 9th World Scout ("Jubilee") Jamboree held at Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield (wikipedia).

Scout Jamborees continue to this day and are very popular.  Explorer Scouts from the 50th Cambridge attended the 25th WSJ in South Korea and will be visiting the 26th WSJ in Poland.

When in the glow of a fire burning low
There are moments I recall
Back to my mind come the days far behind
And the time that hold me over all
Then the years fade away and again I can stray
To paths of a brighter hue
Where boy's voices ring, where Youth is King
And the skies again are blue.

In my dreams I'm going back to Gilwell
To the joys and the happiness I found
On those grand weekends
With my dear old friends
And see the Training Ground
Oh, the grass is greener back in Gilwell
And I breathe again that Scouting air
And in memory, I see B.P.
Whoever will be far from there
